اونٹ کے منہ میں زیرہ

“Cumin seeds in a camel's mouth.”

A quantity far too small to satisfy a large need or appetite.

Incomplete or superficial knowledge is dangerous.

دور کے ڈھول سہانے

“Drums sound sweet from a distance.”

Things appear more attractive or impressive when seen from afar.

ناچ نہ جانے آنگن ٹیڑھا

“One who cannot dance blames the uneven courtyard.”

An incompetent person blames circumstances instead of their own lack of skill.

اپنی گلی میں کتا بھی شیر ہوتا ہے

“Even a dog is a lion in its own street.”

Everyone feels bold and powerful on their own home ground.

جس کی لاٹھی اس کی بھینس

“The buffalo belongs to whoever holds the stick.”

Might is right; power decides ownership and outcomes.

ایک انار سو بیمار

“One pomegranate and a hundred sick people.”

Too many people competing for a single scarce resource.

دال میں کچھ کالا ہے

“There is something black in the lentils.”

Something is suspicious or not quite right about the situation.

چور کی داڑھی میں تنکا

The guilty betray themselves through their own nervous self-consciousness.

آ بیل مجھے مار

A person of mediocre ability can appear superior when surrounded by those with even less.

جیسی کرنی ویسی بھرنی

The results a person receives directly reflect the actions they have taken.

اونچی دکان پھیکا پکوان

An impressive outward appearance can hide poor substance or quality.

سو سنار کی ایک لوہار کی

Many small, gentle efforts can be outweighed by a single powerful, decisive one.

جتنی چادر اتنے پاؤں پھیلاؤ

“Stretch your feet only as far as your blanket reaches.”

Live and spend according to your actual means, not beyond them.

اپنی ڈفلی اپنا راگ

“Everyone plays their own tambourine, their own tune.”

People act separately on their own agendas instead of cooperating together.

بندر کیا جانے ادرک کا سواد

A person unable to appreciate something fine has no real understanding of its worth.

گھر کی مرغی دال برابر

“The hen at home is valued no more than lentils.”

What is easily available at home is undervalued, however good it may be.

اکیلا چنا بھاڑ نہیں پھوڑ سکتا

“A single chickpea cannot roast itself in the furnace.”

One person acting alone cannot accomplish what requires the strength of many.

Every individual has their own differing view on the same matter.

A person's deeply ingrained dishonest habits are extremely hard to fully abandon.

A wrongdoer accuses or blames the very person who is right, to escape guilt.

One should adapt one's behavior and manners to match the place and people around.

A person's pride or arrogance can persist even after they have lost everything.

کھودا پہاڑ نکلا چوہا

A huge effort produced only a disappointingly small result.

اپنے منہ میاں مٹھو بننا

“Calling oneself a sweet parrot with your own mouth.”

Praising and boasting about oneself instead of letting others give the praise.

آم کے آم گٹھلیوں کے دام

“Mangoes for the price of mangoes, and money for the seeds besides.”

Gaining a double benefit from a single transaction or effort.

سانپ بھی مر جائے اور لاٹھی بھی نہ ٹوٹے

“Let the snake die, yet let the stick stay unbroken.”

Achieving one's goal completely while avoiding any cost or damage to oneself.

دودھ کا جلا چھاچھ بھی پھونک پھونک کر پیتا ہے

“One burnt by hot milk blows even on cold buttermilk before drinking it.”

A painful past experience makes a person overly cautious even in safe situations.

A place suffers from complete chaos and injustice under incompetent leadership.

“Why does one need a mirror to see the bangle on one's own hand?”

A truth that is plainly obvious needs no further proof or evidence.

نو دن چلے اڑھائی کوس

“They walked nine days and covered only two and a half miles.”

Progress that is painfully slow despite a great deal of time and effort spent.

عقل بڑی کہ بھینس

“Which is greater — wisdom, or the buffalo?”

Possessing wealth or brute strength is no substitute for having good sense.

چراغ تلے اندھیرا

“Darkness lies directly beneath the lamp.”

A source of light or knowledge can remain blind to the faults nearest to it.

جس تن لاگے وہی تن جانے

“Only the body that bears the pain truly knows it.”

Only the person who suffers a hardship can fully understand what it feels like.

مانگے کی مہندی سے ہاتھ نہیں رنگتے

“Hands are never truly colored by borrowed henna.”

Relying on things borrowed from others brings no lasting satisfaction or pride.

بھینس کے آگے بین بجانا

“Playing the flute in front of a buffalo.”

Wasting effort trying to explain or offer something fine to someone unable to appreciate it.

بھاگتے چور کی لنگوٹی ہی سہی

“From a fleeing thief, even his loincloth is worth taking.”

It is wise to salvage whatever small gain is possible from a bad or losing situation.

بلی کے گلے میں گھنٹی کون باندھے

“Who will tie the bell around the cat's neck?”

A plan may sound good in theory, but no one is willing to take on the risk of carrying it out.

جتنے بڑے میاں اتنی بڑی تان

“As grand as the gentleman, so grand is his tune.”

A person's boasting tends to grow in proportion to their own self-importance.

پانی میں رہ کر مگرمچھ سے بیر

“Living in the water, yet feuding with the crocodile.”

It is foolish to make an enemy of someone who has power over your own situation.

گیدڑ کی سو سالہ زندگی سے شیر کا ایک دن بہتر ہے

“A lion's single day is better than a jackal's hundred years.”

A short life lived with courage and dignity is worth more than a long life lived in fear.

اونٹ کسی کروٹ نہیں بیٹھتا

“The camel will not settle down on any side.”

A stubborn or unpredictable person refuses to settle into any agreeable arrangement.

اندھا بانٹے ریوڑیاں پھر اپنوں کو دے

“The blind man distributing sweets keeps giving to his own kin.”

A person in a position to distribute favors tends to favor their own family or friends.

جہاں چاہ وہاں راہ

“Where there is a will, there is a way.”

Strong determination will always find a path to overcome any obstacle.

مکھی پر مکھی مارنا

“Striking one fly upon another fly.”

Copying another's work mindlessly, without adding any original thought of one's own.

اپنے پاؤں پر کلہاڑی مارنا

“To strike an axe upon one's own foot.”

To cause harm to oneself through one's own careless words or actions.

دیر آید درست آید

“Better it comes late, if it comes right.”

It is better for a good outcome to arrive delayed than for a flawed one to arrive quickly.
