The story of Brazil
Brazil's story begins long before European contact, with diverse Indigenous peoples , including the Tupi, Guarani, and hundreds of other groups , inhabiting the land for thousands of years. In 1500, Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral landed on the coast and claimed the territory for Portugal, beginning over three centuries of colonial rule built on sugar plantations and, tragically, the forced labour of millions of enslaved Africans. Brazil briefly became the seat of the Portuguese empire itself when the royal family fled Napoleon's invasion in 1808, relocating the court to Rio de Janeiro. Independence came in 1822, when Prince Regent Dom Pedro I declared Brazil a sovereign empire, and the country later became a republic in 1889. Brazil was the last nation in the Americas to abolish slavery, in 1888, a legacy that still shapes its diverse, multiracial society. The 20th century brought waves of European, Middle Eastern, and Asian immigration, rapid urbanisation, a new capital built from scratch at Brasília in 1960, and a period of military dictatorship (1964-1985) before democracy was restored in 1988. Today Brazil is South America's largest economy, home to the Amazon Rainforest, and a global cultural force through football, samba, and literature.
