The story of Bolivia
Bolivia's story rises from the shores of Lake Titicaca, where the Tiwanaku civilization built a major Andean urban center that flourished for centuries before collapsing around 1150 CE amid climate shifts. The Inca Empire absorbed the region in the 15th century, only for Spanish conquistadors to arrive in the 1530s and found Charcas, or Upper Peru. Spanish colonizers then discovered the silver-rich mountain of Cerro Rico at Potosรญ in 1545, and for two centuries its mines helped bankroll the Spanish Empire while indigenous forced labor paid the human cost. Resistance simmered, erupting in the 1781 Tupac Katari uprising, and independence was finally declared on 6 August 1825, with the new republic named in honor of Simรณn Bolรญvar. The 20th century brought the costly Chaco War (1932-1935) against Paraguay and then the 1952 National Revolution, which brought universal suffrage, land reform, and mine nationalization. In 2006, Evo Morales became Bolivia's first president of indigenous descent. Today Bolivia remains one of the most Indigenous nations in the Americas, its Andean, Amazonian, and Chaco landscapes as varied as its cultural heritage.
