The story of Ecuador
Long before Spanish sails appeared off its coast, the land now called Ecuador was home to advanced cultures such as the Valdivia (among the oldest known in the Americas), and later the Caรฑari and other highland peoples, before the Inca Empire absorbed the region in the late 15th century and made Quito a northern capital. Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 1530s, founding colonial Quito in 1534 on Inca foundations; for centuries the territory formed part of the Viceroyalty of Peru and then New Granada, known as the Real Audiencia de Quito. Independence movements swept the region in the 1810s-20s: Guayaquil declared independence in 1820, and Antonio Josรฉ de Sucre's victory at the Battle of Pichincha in 1822 freed Quito, after which the territory joined Simรณn Bolรญvar's Gran Colombia. When that union dissolved in 1830, Ecuador emerged as a sovereign republic, named for the equatorial line that crosses it. The 19th and 20th centuries brought cycles of civil conflict, border disputes, and oil-driven growth. Today Ecuador is known for its extraordinary biodiversity , spanning Andean peaks, Amazon rainforest, Pacific coast, and the Galรกpagos Islands , and for a literary and cultural life that draws on all three worlds: indigenous, Spanish colonial, and modern.
