The story of Spain
Spain's story stretches from prehistoric cave art at Altamira through Roman Hispania, then centuries of al-Andalus following the Umayyad conquest of 711 CE, when much of the peninsula became a centre of Islamic learning and architecture. The centuries-long Reconquista by Christian kingdoms culminated in 1492, when the fall of Granada, the marriage-forged union of Castile and Aragon under Isabella I and Ferdinand II, and Columbus's voyage to the Americas together launched Spain into a golden age as a global empire.
