The story of Haiti
Before Europeans arrived, the western third of the island of Hispaniola was home to the Taรญno people, who called it Ayiti, 'land of mountains'. Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1492, and by 1697 the western portion was ceded to France, becoming the colony of Saint-Domingue , the richest colony in the Americas, built on the forced labour of enslaved Africans on sugar and coffee plantations. In 1791 those enslaved people rose up in what became the Haitian Revolution, led over its course by figures including Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines. After defeating French forces at the Battle of Vertiรจres in 1803, the rebels declared independence on 1 January 1804, renaming the nation Haiti , the first country ever founded by a successful uprising of enslaved people, and the second independent nation in the Americas after the United States. France later forced Haiti to pay a crushing indemnity for recognition, a debt that shaped its economy for generations. Through foreign occupation, dictatorship, and natural disaster, including the devastating 2010 earthquake, Haiti's culture , its Creole language, Vodou spirituality, music, and art , has remained a defining source of national identity.
