The story of Gibraltar

Gibraltar's story begins with early human habitation , Neanderthals are believed to have survived here later than almost anywhere else in Europe , followed by Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Roman visitors drawn to the dramatic limestone Rock guarding the strait between Europe and Africa. In 711 CE the Umayyad general Tariq ibn Ziyad landed nearby, giving the Rock its name (Jabal Tariq, 'Mountain of Tariq'), and the Moors held it for centuries, building the first fortified town in the 12th century. Christian Castile finally recaptured Gibraltar from the Moors in 1462. Its modern identity was forged in 1704, when an Anglo-Dutch fleet seized the Rock during the War of the Spanish Succession; Spain formally ceded it to Britain 'in perpetuity' under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Gibraltar then withstood the legendary Great Siege of 1779-1783 and became a fortified Crown Colony central to British naval power in the Mediterranean. In the 20th century, Gibraltarians twice voted overwhelmingly to remain British rather than pass to Spanish sovereignty, gained a self-governing constitution in 1969, and endured a border with Spain that Franco closed and that reopened only in 1985. Today Gibraltar is a small, prosperous British Overseas Territory of around 32,000 people , a bilingual, multicultural crossroads where Barbary macaques, Moorish walls, and modern finance sit within under seven square kilometres of Rock.
