The story of Guernsey
Guernsey's recorded history stretches back to Roman times, when the island was known as Sarnia, part of the province of Gaul. In 933 CE the Channel Islands were annexed to the Duchy of Normandy, and when Duke William conquered England in 1066 Guernsey became tied to the English Crown. The pivotal break came in 1204, when King John lost mainland Normandy to France; the Channel Islands chose to remain loyal to the English Crown rather than the French, and have governed themselves as self-ruling Crown dependencies ever since , never absorbed into England, Great Britain, or later the United Kingdom. A 1483 Papal Bull secured neutrality for the islands during centuries of Anglo-French wars, letting trade flourish. Guernsey's most famous resident-in-exile, Victor Hugo, arrived in 1855 and spent fifteen years writing at Hauteville House, including much of "Les Misérables." The 20th century brought the island's darkest chapter: five years of Nazi German occupation (1940-1945), the only part of the British Isles to fall under German rule in WWII, ending with Liberation Day on 9 May 1945. Post-war Guernsey rebuilt around fishing, horticulture, tourism, and , from the 1960s onward , international finance, becoming one of the world's most prosperous small offshore financial centres while still governing itself through its own parliament, the States of Deliberation.
