The story of Mayotte
Long before it became a French department, Mayotte was shaped by seafarers of the Indian Ocean: Bantu-speaking migrants from the East African coast, Malagasy settlers from Madagascar, and Arab traders who brought Islam to the island by the 9th century. A Malagasy-descended sultanate, centred on the royal town of Tsingoni, unified the island by around the 16th century and ruled for generations. In 1841, weakened by raids from rival Comorian sultans, Sultan Andriantsoly ceded Mayotte to France in exchange for protection, making it France's oldest possession in the Comoro archipelago. France later administered Mayotte alongside the other three Comoro islands as a single colonial territory, but when the archipelago voted for independence in 1974, Mayotte alone chose overwhelmingly to stay French , a decision it repeated even more decisively in 1976. That choice set Mayotte on a separate path from Comoros, which still formally claims the island. Status evolved slowly: territorial collectivity, then overseas collectivity in 2001, until a 2009 referendum (95% in favour) made Mayotte France's 101st department in 2011, and an outermost region of the European Union in 2014. Today Mayotte is a predominantly Muslim, Shimaore- and Kibushi-speaking French department rebuilding after Cyclone Chido's devastation in December 2024 , still poor by EU standards, but proudly, distinctly Mahorais.
