The story of Somalia
Somalia's coast is widely believed to correspond to the ancient Egyptians' Land of Punt, a source of frankincense and myrrh traded along the Red Sea more than 3,500 years ago (its exact location is debated among historians). Islam arrived with Arab and Persian traders from the 7th century CE, and over the following centuries powerful Somali states rose along the coast and interior: the Ajuran Sultanate, master well- and canal-builders who controlled southern trade routes, and the Adal Sultanate in the north, famed for General Ahmed Gurey's 16th-century campaign against the Ethiopian Empire. European colonisation split the region into British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland in the late 19th century. The two territories united on independence in 1960 to form the Somali Republic. A 1969 coup brought Mohamed Siad Barre to power for two decades of authoritarian rule, and his fall in 1991 opened a long civil war from which the north (Somaliland) broke away as a self-governing but unrecognised territory. A federal government re-established in 2012 has been rebuilding state institutions ever since, in a country still defined by its ancient trading heritage, deep oral-poetry tradition, and resilient clan-based society.
