The story of El Salvador
El Salvador's story starts with Maya farming communities, most vividly preserved at Joya de Cerén, a village buried by volcanic ash around 600 CE and now called the "Pompeii of the Americas" for how completely it froze daily life in place. By the time the Spanish arrived, the region was dominated by the Pipil, a Nahua-descended people whose kingdom of Cuzcatlán resisted conquest fiercely before falling in the 1520s.
