The story of Grenada

Long before Europeans arrived, Grenada was home to Indigenous peoples from South America, most recently the Kalinago (Island Carib), who had displaced earlier Arawakan settlers. Christopher Columbus sighted the island in 1498 during his third voyage but did not land. France established the first permanent European colony in the 1650s, and fierce resistance by the Kalinago ended in tragedy at Sauteurs in the north of the island. Grenada passed to Britain by the Treaty of Paris in 1763, was briefly retaken by France in 1779-1783, and then remained a British colony for nearly two centuries, developing a plantation economy built on the labour of enslaved Africans and, after emancipation in 1834, indentured workers.
