“Don't put an easy tongue in an easy mouth.”

Practical duties should be taken up promptly in youth, while spiritual devotion is best approached with the maturity that comes later in life.

Loyalty and good character in a loved one are valued above all else.

The spiritual merit earned by making someone else happy is immense, beyond any measure of physical burden.

Conditions tend to reinforce themselves — abundance attracts more abundance.

“Whatever joy you seek, it can be achieved by yourself; whatever misery you seek, it can be found by yourself.”

A person is ultimately responsible for creating their own happiness or suffering.

Words or actions aimed elsewhere can still land on and affect those nearby.

“On the battlefield, there is no distinction between upper and lower class.”

Money matters can strain even close family ties, so keeping finances separate preserves harmony.

“Unpleasant medicine will sometimes cure you in the same way that people you don't like will sometimes benefit you.”

Just as bitter medicine can heal the body, difficult people or hard truths can still do us good.

“Virtuous deeds and dire suffering can both lead to divine happiness.”

Both good actions and hardship endured can ultimately lead a person toward spiritual fulfillment.

“Don't reply when you are sleepy, and don't repent when you are dying.”

Act and speak at the right time — decisions and apologies made too late or too rushed lose their meaning.

“People who are not careful about what they say tend not to be careful with the rest of their body.”

Carelessness in speech often reflects a broader lack of discipline in one's actions and conduct.

“You can die from overeating or hunger. As ever, the best path is always the middle way.”

Both excess and deprivation are dangerous — moderation and balance are the wisest course, echoing Buddhist teaching.

“If you don't contemplate those that suffer, compassion is just an empty word.”

Compassion must be grounded in genuine reflection on others' suffering, or it is meaningless.

“Having loving parents is no guarantee that your fate will go in a similarly positive direction.”

A good upbringing does not automatically determine a good outcome in life — fate follows its own course.

“Even if a cup breaks, don't forget the beautiful picture on it.”

Even after loss or damage, the good qualities and memories of something — or someone — should still be honored.

“You should protect your possessions, but if something is stolen, perhaps someone needed the object more than you.”

While care for one's belongings is reasonable, loss can be met with compassion rather than resentment.

“If you have something on your mind, get it out — just as it's important to remove grubs eating the bark of a tree.”

Worries or grievances left unspoken can quietly damage a person, just as pests left unchecked damage a tree.

“It is better to sit at the feet of the learned, than to be at the head table of idiots.”

It is wiser to humbly learn from wise company than to hold status among foolish people.

“Eat in accordance with the seasons as you would dress for different types of weather.”

Just as clothing should suit the weather, one's diet and habits should adapt to the season for good health.
