Aga'ifenua

“Custom is not mere folklore — it is the rule of what is right.”

Aga'ifenua, "the way of the land," is the living body of customary law and etiquette that defines proper conduct and preserves harmony across Wallisian and Futunan family, village, and island life.

Kātoaga

“What is gathered together must be shared out, each portion according to its place.”

The kātoaga is the customary festival of gift exchange — pigs, root crops, tapa cloth, and money are offered and then redistributed by rank, displaying the social order and binding the community together.

“The kava bowl is passed in order of rank, and rank is remembered by the bowl.”

The kava ceremony orders who is served first and who speaks first, making the shared drinking of kava a living display of chiefly rank and mutual respect for hierarchy.

“The elder speaks first, and the young listen before they act.”

Age carries authority in Wallisian and Futunan families — elders are given priority and deference, and the young are expected to seek their counsel before acting on their own.

“A quarrel is mended with a gift, not settled by shouting.”

Open confrontation is avoided; disputes are traditionally resolved through mediation, an elder's counsel, or the offering of a symbolic gift to restore harmony rather than public argument.

“The eldest sister is honored, and her brothers stand as her guard.”

Family roles carry ranked duties: the eldest sister holds a position of particular honor within the household, and her brothers carry a customary duty to protect and support her.

“The Mass opens the feast, and custom carries it onward.”

Since 19th-century evangelization, Catholic faith and pre-Christian custom (aga'ifenua) have been woven together rather than one replacing the other — a kātoaga still opens with Mass before the kava ceremony and the customary distribution follow.

“The land and the people are one word: fenua.”

Fenua names both "land" and "community" at once — a reminder that home, family, and territory are inseparable in Wallisian and Futunan life, echoed in aga'ifenua itself, "the custom of the land."

“The queen retains all her independence and all her authority over the natives.”

A clause from the 1887 protectorate treaty between the Kingdom of Uvea and France, insisted upon by Queen Amelia Tokagahahau Aliki to preserve the customary monarchy's sovereignty even while accepting French protection.

pule

“Every parcel of land, bush or house, leads back through its pule to the chief.”

Land is held in two customary categories, bush land and house land, and each family's rights are linked through a pule (land guardian) back to the traditional chief; rights pass to both sons and daughters, though sons carry the main duty of keeping the land productive.

gatu

“A gatu is not decoration — it is what a family gives to the ceremony.”

Gatu, giant tapa cloths beaten and painted from mulberry and breadfruit bark, are made to be offered at customary and religious ceremonies rather than kept as ornament — the craft still employs around 300 people across the islands.

“The healer is asked before the hospital is.”

Traditional healers, mostly women working with massage, local oils, and remedies made from local plants, are consulted first for illness and childbirth, with hospital care sought afterward or alongside.

“Every family brings something to the feast: pork and turtle for the great occasion, chicken for the celebration.”

Public and ceremonial occasions are provisioned collectively, with each family contributing food — pork and turtle mark the most important feasts, chicken is kept for lesser celebrations, and kava or alcohol accompanies the gathering.

“The islands are small, yet they still crown three kings.”

Wallis and Futuna preserves three customary kingdoms — Uvea, Sigave, and Alo — each with a living king who sits inside the territory's modern government alongside the elected assembly.

“What is not written is kept alive by the chant.”

History that was never set down in writing, such as the memory of the old Tongan presence on Uvea, is preserved and passed on through oral chants like the Chant of Lausikula.

“A child without two parents is not a child without a family.”

Marriage is traditionally arranged and approved through family and church, but where a child is born outside that sanctioned union, the extended family steps in — such children are commonly raised by an aunt or a grandmother rather than left without care.
