pule

Every parcel of land, bush or house, leads back through its pule to the chief.

Land is held in two customary categories, bush land and house land, and each family's rights are linked through a pule (land guardian) back to the traditional chief; rights pass to both sons and daughters, though sons carry the main duty of keeping the land productive.
