Aga'ifenua

“Custom is not mere folklore — it is the rule of what is right.”

Aga'ifenua, "the way of the land," is the living body of customary law and etiquette that defines proper conduct and preserves harmony across Wallisian and Futunan family, village, and island life.

Kātoaga

“What is gathered together must be shared out, each portion according to its place.”

The kātoaga is the customary festival of gift exchange — pigs, root crops, tapa cloth, and money are offered and then redistributed by rank, displaying the social order and binding the community together.

“The kava bowl is passed in order of rank, and rank is remembered by the bowl.”

The kava ceremony orders who is served first and who speaks first, making the shared drinking of kava a living display of chiefly rank and mutual respect for hierarchy.

“A quarrel is mended with a gift, not settled by shouting.”

Open confrontation is avoided; disputes are traditionally resolved through mediation, an elder's counsel, or the offering of a symbolic gift to restore harmony rather than public argument.

“The eldest sister is honored, and her brothers stand as her guard.”

Family roles carry ranked duties: the eldest sister holds a position of particular honor within the household, and her brothers carry a customary duty to protect and support her.

“The Mass opens the feast, and custom carries it onward.”

Since 19th-century evangelization, Catholic faith and pre-Christian custom (aga'ifenua) have been woven together rather than one replacing the other — a kātoaga still opens with Mass before the kava ceremony and the customary distribution follow.
