Customary land is held in trust for future generations, not owned outright by any single living person.

“Kastom is the root; the leaf that forgets the root will wither.”

A person who abandons traditional custom loses the source of their strength and identity.

“The chief who forgets his people will one day find no one behind him.”

Leadership in kastom society depends on the ongoing consent and support of the community, not on title alone.

“The sea gives to those who respect it, and takes from those who do not.”

Careless disregard for nature and its taboos brings misfortune, while respect for it brings sustenance.

Hospitality is offered without condition, and questions about a visitor come only after they have been welcomed.

The quiet, measured words of the experienced hold more true authority than loud, hasty speech from the young.

Traditional craft skills, passed down and practiced slowly, build patience and discipline in those who learn them.

Shared kava drinking in the nakamal calms disputes while allowing honest, careful speech to come forward.

“A decision made by one voice alone is a decision not yet made.”

Customary governance depends on communal consensus, not on a single ruler's unilateral decree.

“A hundred people eat one small white-eye bird: it is very small, but the food becomes plenty.”

When even a scarce resource is properly shared and redistributed among the whole community, it satisfies everyone — illustrating the chief's customary duty of fair distribution.

“The chief holds the namwele; he breaks it to help his people, and forgets no one.”

A true chief shares out his customary authority, symbolized by the sacred namwele palm leaf, so that every person in his community receives a part of it — real leadership leaves no one out.

“Whatever we seal, that is what we stand for.”

A commitment sealed together by the men of the nakamal through the kava ritual binds everyone present to honor it — solidarity and one's given word are inseparable.
