Piailug explained that his own name, Mau, meaning "strong," was given to him by his community because of his relentless dedication to staying at sea, even through storms, rather than returning early to land.

“What you going to do when the GPS broke, or the engine broke? You just gonna follow the wind and the current away, and maybe die in the ocean.”

Piailug argued that depending on modern instruments without ever learning traditional wayfinding leaves sailors dangerously unprepared for the moment their technology fails at sea.

“The order that carries the tribute begins at the highest island and ends at the lowest, and every island between must pass it on.”

Under the traditional sawei exchange network, the outer islands stretching from Yap toward Chuuk sent annual tribute to the Gagil district of Yap through a strict chain of rank running from the highest-ranking island down to the lowest, a system some scholars have called the "Yap Empire."
