The story of Western Sahara
The western Sahara's story begins with nomadic Sahrawi Bedouin tribes who herded camels and goats across its hammada plains and Atlantic coastline for centuries, trading along caravan routes linking Morocco to the Sahel. European interest came late: Spain established a protectorate over the coastal Rรญo de Oro in 1884 and, by 1958, folded the territory into Spanish Sahara, an overseas province. As decolonization swept Africa, Sahrawi nationalism grew, and in 1973 the newly founded Polisario Front took up arms against Spanish rule. Spain's 1975 withdrawal triggered a crisis: Morocco organized the "Green March," some 350,000 civilians walking into the territory, while the Madrid Accords handed administration , not sovereignty , to Morocco and Mauritania. The Polisario Front declared the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in 1976 and fought a guerrilla war until a UN-brokered ceasefire in 1991 promised a referendum on self-determination that has still never taken place. Today Morocco administers roughly 80 percent of the territory west of a heavily fortified sand and stone wall, while the Polisario-led SADR holds the remainder and governs tens of thousands of Sahrawi refugees from camps in Tindouf, Algeria. The United Nations still lists Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory , Africa's last unresolved case of decolonization.
