The story of Central African Republic
The territory now called the Central African Republic has been home to communities for millennia, from Bantu- and Ubangian-speaking farmers to the forest-dwelling Aka (Pygmy) peoples whose presence in the region's rainforests reaches back thousands of years. From roughly the 16th century, trans-Saharan and East African trade networks brought migration, Islamic influence in the north, and centuries of slave raiding that devastated local populations. France began colonizing the area from the 1880s-1890s, folding it into French Equatorial Africa and formally creating the colony of Ubangi-Shari in 1903 , the name the territory carried until independence. Colonial rule was harsh, marked by forced labor on rubber and cotton concessions. The independence movement crystallized around Barthélemy Boganda, a Catholic priest turned politician who founded the MESAN party in 1949 and became the country's founding father, though he died in a plane crash in March 1959, months before the Central African Republic gained full independence from France on 13 August 1960. The following decades brought instability, including Jean-Bédel Bokassa's flamboyant and brutal rule as self-declared Emperor of the "Central African Empire" (1976-1979). Despite a return to constitutional government and multiparty elections in the 1990s, the country has faced recurring conflict.
