The story of Thailand

Thailand's story begins with the Sukhothai Kingdom, founded circa 1238 and often regarded as the first true Thai state, followed by the far larger and longer-lived Ayutthaya Kingdom from 1351. Ayutthaya grew into one of Southeast Asia's great trading capitals before falling to a Burmese invasion in 1767. From the ashes, King Taksin rebuilt a capital at Thonburi, and in 1782 General Chao Phraya Chakri took the throne as Rama I, founding the Chakri dynasty and establishing Bangkok as the new capital , a dynasty that still reigns today. Alone among Southeast Asian nations, Siam (renamed Thailand in 1939) skillfully played British and French colonial ambitions against each other and was never colonized. In 1932 a bloodless revolution ended absolute monarchy and introduced a constitutional system. The long reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX, 1946-2016) anchored the nation through decades of change, and today Thailand under King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) is a modern constitutional monarchy and one of Asia's most visited countries, proud of a literary and artistic heritage stretching back to Sukhothai's earliest stone inscriptions.
