The story of Philippines
The Philippine archipelago was home to Austronesian-speaking communities and trading polities , Tondo, Cebu, Sulu, Maynila , centuries before Europeans arrived, linked by sea trade with China, India, and the wider Malay world. Ferdinand Magellan's expedition reached the islands in 1521 and was defeated at Mactan by the chieftain Lapu-Lapu, but Spanish colonization took hold under Miguel López de Legazpi from 1565, with Manila founded as the colonial capital in 1571 and named for King Philip II. Spain ruled for 333 years, until defeat in the Spanish-American War of 1898, when revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence , only for the islands to become a US territory instead. Filipino forces resisted US rule, then endured brutal Japanese occupation during WWII, before the Philippines finally gained recognised independence on 4 July 1946. Independence Day is now commemorated on 12 June, marking the 1898 declaration. Today the Philippines is a vast archipelago nation of more than 7,000 islands, its culture a distinctive blend of Malay, Spanish, American, and Asian influences.
