The story of Malaysia
The Malay Peninsula and Borneo have been crossroads of trade and migration for over two thousand years, shaped by Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms such as Langkasuka and later by the powerful maritime empire of Srivijaya. The pivotal moment came around 1400 CE, when the prince Parameswara founded the Malacca Sultanate on the strait between the peninsula and Sumatra, turning it into one of the great trading ports of Asia and the cradle of Malay language, Islam, and courtly culture in the region. Malacca fell to the Portuguese in 1511, passed to the Dutch in 1641, and was gradually absorbed into British colonial control through the 18th and 19th centuries as the Straits Settlements and the Malay states. Japan occupied Malaya during the Second World War (1942-1945), and the postwar years brought a push for self-rule. The Federation of Malaya gained independence on 31 August 1957 under Tunku Abdul Rahman, and on 16 September 1963 it joined with Sabah, Sarawak, and (briefly) Singapore to form Malaysia. Today Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multi-faith federal constitutional monarchy and one of Southeast Asia's most developed economies.
