The story of Brunei

Brunei's story stretches back to at least the 6th century CE, when the small sultanate on Borneo's north coast traded with and paid tribute to China. Its golden age arrived under Sultan Bolkiah ("Nakhoda Ragam"), the fifth sultan, whose reign in the late 15th and early 16th centuries saw Brunei's power stretch across nearly all of Borneo and into the Philippines' Sulu Archipelago , enough that Ferdinand Magellan's fleet anchored off its shores in 1521 and recorded a wealthy, fortified royal city. That reach shrank through the 19th century as Sarawak and North Borneo were ceded away, and in 1888 Brunei became a British protectorate, with a British Resident installed from 1906. Oil production from 1929 quietly rebuilt the sultanate's fortunes, surviving Japanese occupation during the Second World War. Self-government returned in 1959, and at midnight on 1 January 1984 Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah proclaimed full independence, with Brunei joining ASEAN the same week. Today it remains one of the world's few absolute monarchies, governed under the Melayu Islam Beraja (Malay Islamic Monarchy) philosophy and sustained by oil and gas wealth.
