The story of Taiwan
Taiwan's human story stretches back millennia: its Austronesian indigenous peoples are regarded by many linguists as the likely origin point of the Austronesian language family that later spread across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Chinese settlement from the mainland grew from the 17th century, when the island passed through Dutch and Spanish trading colonies before the Ming loyalist Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) expelled the Dutch in 1662 and founded the short-lived Kingdom of Tungning.
