The story of Singapore

According to the Malay Annals, a Srivijayan prince named Sang Nila Utama landed on the island circa 1299 and founded Singapura, the 'Lion City'. The port thrived under the Malay Sultanate of Malacca and later Johor, but was eclipsed for centuries until 1819, when Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company established a trading post there, turning it into a key node of British Malaya and, from 1826, part of the Straits Settlements. Singapore grew into one of the world's busiest ports under colonial rule, was occupied by Japan from 1942-1945, and achieved self-government in 1959 under Lee Kuan Yew. It briefly joined the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 before separating to become a fully independent republic on 9 August 1965. In the decades since, Singapore transformed from a resource-poor port city into one of the world's leading financial and trade hubs, prized for its stability, rule of law, and multicultural society of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian communities living under one flag.
