The story of Timor-Leste

The island of Timor was home to Austronesian and Melanesian peoples for millennia before Portuguese traders and Dominican friars arrived in the 16th century, drawn by the region's sandalwood. Portugal and the Netherlands eventually split the island between them, with the eastern half becoming Portuguese Timor, formally a colony from 1702. That era ended abruptly in 1975: after Portugal's Carnation Revolution triggered rapid decolonization, the pro-independence party Fretilin declared the Democratic Republic of East Timor, only for Indonesia to invade nine days later and annex the territory as its 27th province. The occupation that followed, marked by severe human rights abuses, drew international condemnation and produced two Nobel Peace laureates, José Ramos-Horta and Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo. A UN-supervised referendum in 1999 saw over three-quarters of voters choose independence, and after a transitional UN administration, Timor-Leste formally became sovereign on 20 May 2002 , the first new nation of the 21st century. Today it is rebuilding as a young Southeast Asian democracy.
