SEA Games Explained: What It Is and Why Southeast Asia Cares
The SEA Games is Southeast Asia biggest multi-sport event. Learn its history, medal table leaders, host rotation, and why it matters to 680 million people.
The Southeast Asian Games, known as the SEA Games, is a biennial multi-sport event involving 11 countries across the region. First held in 1959 in Bangkok under the name Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, the event has grown to include over 500 medal events and draws more than 7,000 athletes per edition.
Origin and Founding Members
The games were founded by 6 nations: Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, and South Vietnam. The Philippines joined in 1977, followed by Brunei in 1977, Indonesia in 1977, Cambodia in 1993, and Timor-Leste in 2003. The Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) governs all editions and rotates hosting rights among members.
- Founded 1959 in Bangkok as the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games
- Renamed Southeast Asian Games in 1977 when all 11 nations joined
- Held every 2 years, alternating with odd-numbered years
- SEAGF rotates hosting duties to ensure all members host at least once per decade
Which Countries Win the Most Medals
Thailand leads the all-time gold medal table with over 3,800 golds across all editions up to 2023. Indonesia ranks second with approximately 3,200 golds. The Philippines surpassed Malaysia for third place in the overall tally at the 2023 Cambodian edition, which was the first SEA Games hosted by Cambodia.
At the 2023 Phnom Penh SEA Games, Cambodia finished 3rd overall with 276 medals including 81 golds, a historic result for the host nation. Vietnam won 136 golds at the 2021 Hanoi edition, benefiting from home-ground selection of sports disciplines.
Sports Included and How the List Changes
The host nation selects sports from the SEAGF-approved list, which currently includes over 60 disciplines. Core sports that appear at every edition include athletics, swimming, football, boxing, and weightlifting. The host may add up to 15 optional sports, which is why the program changes significantly between editions.
E-sports became an official SEA Games medal event in 2019 at the Philippines edition. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and DOTA 2 were among the titles. E-sports returned at every subsequent edition through 2025.
Why the SEA Games Matters Beyond Sport
For smaller ASEAN economies, the SEA Games is the primary stage where athletes build international careers. Hosting generates measurable economic activity — the 2023 Cambodia edition contributed an estimated USD 47 million to the Phnom Penh economy through tourism, hotel bookings, and broadcast rights.
- Career launchpad for athletes who lack Olympic qualification budgets
- Tourism driver generating 40,000 to 100,000 visitor arrivals per edition
- Diplomatic soft power tool between ASEAN member states
- Infrastructure accelerant — host cities build stadiums, roads, and transit ahead of games
Upcoming Editions and Where to Watch
The 2025 SEA Games is scheduled in Thailand, marking the country fifth time hosting. Broadcast rights vary by country — One Championship, beIN Sports, and national public broadcasters share coverage. The official SEA Games YouTube channel provides free highlight clips within 24 hours of each event.
