Its origin lies in the Kalahari Desert of southern Africa, where wild ancestors were prized not for sweetness but for their water content, a portable source of hydration that could be stored for months in a dry environment.
Origin and native range
Wild watermelons grow today in southern Africa's Kalahari and Namibian regions. Recent DNA studies (2021) confirmed the cultivated watermelon descends from a related species in Sudan and the Sahel, the Kordofan melon, rather than the bitter wild Kalahari fruit. Domestication occurred along the Nile River roughly 4,300 years ago โ watermelon seeds have been found in Egyptian tombs of the 12th Dynasty (1900 BCE).
History and spread
Watermelons spread through North Africa and into the Mediterranean during the classical period. Roman writers Pliny and Galen described watermelons. Moorish expansion carried the fruit into Spain by the 10th century. From there, Spanish colonists brought watermelons to the Americas in the 1500s, where indigenous peoples in Florida and the Caribbean had already encountered melons through trade routes. By the 1600s watermelons were widely cultivated across the American South.

China is by far the world's largest producer (about 60% of global supply), followed by Turkey, Iran, India, Brazil, Algeria, Egypt, and the United States.
How to grow watermelons
- Climate: Need warm summers (24-30ยฐC ideal) and at least 80-110 frost-free days depending on variety.
- Soil: Sandy loam, well-drained, pH 6.0-6.8. Watermelons hate cold wet soil.
- Sun: Full sun, 8+ hours.
- Seeds vs transplants: Direct-sow after last frost. In short-season climates, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before transplant.
- Spacing: 1.5m between hills; 2m between rows. Vines sprawl widely.
- Watering: Deep weekly soak, especially during fruit development. Reduce watering as fruit ripens to concentrate sweetness.
- Fertilizing: Balanced NPK at planting; switch to higher potassium during flowering and fruit set.
- Pollination: Bees move pollen between male and female flowers. Plant pollinator-friendly companions.
- Harvest: Check for: yellow ground spot, dried tendril nearest the fruit, dull skin (not shiny), hollow thump when tapped.
- First fruit: 80-90 days from seed for early varieties; 90-110 days for full-size types.
