Origin and history
Originated in eastern China, brought to Korea and Japan over 1,000 years ago. The makuwa melon has been a cornerstone of Korean summer eating for centuries.
Where Korean melons grow today
South Korea (the leading producer), Japan, and northeastern China. Limited commercial production in the United States and Europe.
How to grow
Same as cantaloupes โ warm summers, sandy loam, full sun. Earlier maturing than most melons (70-80 days).
Bottom line
A sweet, hydrating, photogenic summer melon. Worth trying if you can find seeds.
