Robert Rex

Premier and Statesman · 1909–1992

Who is Robert Rex?

Robert Rex was a Niuean statesman who became the first Premier of Niue when the island achieved self-governing status in free association with New Zealand on 19 October 1974, a position he held until his death in 1992, making him Niue's longest-serving head of government. Born in Anafonua, Avatele, on 25 January 1909 to a European trader father and a Niuean mother, Fisimonomono Tufaina, he grew up on the island and rose through local government before leading Niue through the constitutional negotiations of the early 1970s that established its self-governing status. Over nearly two decades in office he held virtually every ministerial portfolio at various times, shaping the young nation's institutions from their foundation. His service was recognised with an OBE in 1973 and a CMG in 1977, and in 1984 he became the first Niuean ever to receive a knighthood. He mentored the generation of leaders who followed him, including future Premiers Young Vivian and Frank Lui, who served in his Cabinet. He died in office in Alofi in December 1992 at the age of 83, having guided Niue through its formative years as a self-governing nation.
