The story of Niue

Niue is one of the world's largest raised coral atolls, known to its own people as "the Rock of Polynesia." Archaeological evidence points to settlement by Polynesian voyagers, likely from Samoa and Tonga, around 900 CE. The island developed its own distinct Polynesian culture and language, Vagahau Niue, largely isolated from outside contact for centuries. Captain James Cook sighted Niue in 1774 but was refused a landing three times, prompting him to name it "Savage Island." Christian missionaries arrived in the 1840s-1850s and reshaped island life. In 1900 Niue's chiefs petitioned Britain for protection, and in 1901 the island was annexed to New Zealand alongside the Cook Islands.
