Who is Oliver Mtukudzi?

Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi was a Zimbabwean musician, singer, and songwriter widely regarded as one of southern Africa's most influential recording artists. Born in Highfield, Harare, he began performing in the 1970s and developed a signature sound, popularly called "Tuku Music," that fused Shona mbira melodies and jiti rhythms with township jazz, Katekwe guitar styles, and elements of Afro-pop. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he released over 60 albums and became known for lyrics, often delivered in Shona, that addressed HIV/AIDS awareness, family life, social injustice, and political commentary, at times couched in metaphor to navigate a tense political climate. He toured extensively across Africa, Europe, and North America, earned numerous Zimbabwe National Arts Merit Awards and Kora Awards, and served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Eastern and Southern Africa, using his platform to raise awareness of children's and public health issues. He died in January 2019, and his songs remain a defining part of Zimbabwe's cultural soundtrack.
