Who is Naim Frashëri?
Naim Frashëri was an Albanian poet and writer widely regarded as the national poet of Albania. Born in the village of Frashër in 1846, then part of the Ottoman Empire, he became a leading intellectual voice of the Albanian National Awakening (Rilindja) in the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1879, together with his brother Sami Frashëri and other Albanian intellectuals, he co-founded the Society for the Publication of Albanian Writings, working to promote literacy and literature in the Albanian language at a time when the Ottoman authorities restricted its use. He edited the influential magazine Drita and helped produce some of the earliest modern Albanian-language textbooks. Among his best-known works are Bagëti e Bujqësi ("Herds and Crops"), a pastoral poem celebrating Albanian rural life, and Histori e Skënderbeut ("History of Skanderbeg"), an epic poem that helped cement Skanderbeg's status as a national symbol. Frashëri wrote fluently in Albanian, Turkish, Persian, and Greek, and his verse combined Romantic nationalism with Bektashi spiritual themes. He died in Constantinople (modern Istanbul) in 1900. His poetry, prizing themes of freedom, unity, and love of homeland, remains foundational to modern Albanian literature and national identity.
