Who is Kaya?

Kaya, born Joseph Reginald Topize on 10 August 1960 in Roche-Bois, Port Louis, was a Mauritian musician credited with creating "seggae," a fusion of traditional Mauritian sega rhythms with Jamaican reggae. Raised in a large family by a fisherman father who could not support his schooling, he was largely left to fend for himself from a young age and experienced discrimination as a Mauritian Creole of mixed African and Malagasy descent. He taught himself guitar as a teenager, performing covers at local dances before adopting the stage name "Kaya" in tribute to Bob Marley's album of the same name after discovering reggae music. He formed the band Racinetatan with friends from his home neighborhood of Roche-Bois, blending reggae influences with local Creole music and social commentary rooted in the "roots and culture" movement. By 1986 this fusion had crystallized into seggae, a genre that gave voice to Mauritius's Creole underclass and became one of the island's most influential musical exports. Kaya also campaigned publicly for the decriminalization of cannabis. He died on 21 February 1999, days after being arrested for smoking marijuana at a concert, while in police custody — a death that triggered major riots and remains a defining moment in modern Mauritian social history. He is remembered as both a musical innovator and a symbol of Creole identity and social justice.
