Who is Jaime Sáenz?

Jaime Saenz was a Bolivian poet and novelist from La Paz, widely regarded as one of the most important and singular voices in twentieth-century Bolivian literature. His work is deeply rooted in the landscape, altitude, and nocturnal atmosphere of the city of La Paz, exploring themes of death, mysticism, solitude, and the sacred through dense, hallucinatory imagery. His novel "Felipe Delgado", published in 1979, is considered one of the major works of Bolivian fiction, portraying a man's descent through the bars and back streets of La Paz in a meditation on alienation and spiritual search. His poetry collections, including works exploring the death-drenched imagery associated with Andean highland life, established a highly influential and idiosyncratic style that shaped generations of later Bolivian writers. He was also known for his eccentric lifestyle, chosen isolation, and deep, almost mystical relationship with his native city, which he treated as a central character across his work. He remains a foundational figure studied throughout Bolivian and Latin American literary criticism.
