Who is Claudia Lars?
Claudia Lars, born Margarita del Carmen Brannon Vega in Armenia, El Salvador, to a Salvadoran mother and an Irish-American father, became one of the most significant Salvadoran poets of the twentieth century and a leading woman's voice in Central American letters. She began publishing poetry in the 1920s under her pen name and went on to produce collections such as Estrellas en el pozo (1934) and Sonetos (1947), exploring themes of childhood, nature, memory, and spirituality in a lyrical, intimate style. Beyond her own writing, she worked as a journalist and cultural editor, directing literary pages in Salvadoran newspapers and mentoring younger writers, and she represented El Salvador at literary and diplomatic gatherings across the Americas. She was a contemporary and correspondent of other major Central American literary figures of her era. In recognition of her lasting influence, El Salvador's Ministry of Culture established the Premio Nacional de Poesía Claudia Lars, awarded annually to Salvadoran poets, ensuring her name remains directly tied to the country's ongoing poetic tradition.
