Who is Traditional Brunei Wisdom?
Traditional Brunei Wisdom gathers the proverbs and sayings (peribahasa and perbilangan) that have been passed down orally among the Malay-speaking people of Brunei Darussalam for generations. These lines have no single named author; they are the shared inheritance of fishermen along the Brunei River, farmers, traders, elders, and royal courtiers who compressed hard-won experience into a few memorable words. Brunei's proverb tradition is part of the wider Malay-world oral heritage shared with neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia, a natural consequence of Brunei Malay being the nation's language and of Brunei's long history within the broader Malay cultural and trading world of Borneo and the South China Sea. Brunei proverbs draw imagery from rivers, boats, forests, and village life, and they teach patience, humility, loyalty, caution in speech, and respect for community and consensus, values closely tied to Brunei's Melayu Islam Beraja, or Malay Islamic Monarchy, philosophy of national life. Because this wisdom lives chiefly in everyday speech rather than any single fixed printed source, small variations exist between tellings and regions. This platform records the widely recognised Malay-language forms current in Brunei and, in keeping with its accuracy rule, presents them as traditional rather than attributing them to any one person.
