“Rota alone among the main islands was never invaded in 1944, and its old village of Songsong still shows it.”
Unlike Saipan and Tinian, Rota was bypassed by American forces during the 1944 Mariana Islands campaign and was not invaded; its Japanese garrison surrendered only after the war ended, leaving the historic Chamorro village of Songsong with less wartime disruption to its traditional sites than other islands in the chain.
