The story of Cook Islands

The Cook Islands were settled by Polynesian voyagers sailing vaka (ocean canoes) from central Polynesia, with Rarotonga becoming a hub of that migration roughly 1,000-1,300 years ago; from here, ancestors of the Māori went on to settle Aotearoa New Zealand. Spanish navigator Alvaro de Mendana was the first European recorded to sight the islands in 1595, but it was British explorer Captain James Cook, who charted several islands in 1773 and 1777, whose name the group eventually carried. Missionaries from the London Missionary Society arrived in the 1820s and reshaped religious life. Fearing French expansion from nearby Tahiti, local chiefs sought British protection, and the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. In 1900-1901 they were annexed and placed within the boundaries of the Colony of New Zealand, beginning a relationship that continues today. On 4 August 1965 the Cook Islands became fully self-governing in free association with New Zealand, with Albert Henry as first Premier. Today the fifteen islands balance a Polynesian cultural revival, a tourism-driven economy, and one of the closest constitutional partnerships anywhere in the Pacific.
