Angkor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Angkor archaeological park in Siem Reap — including Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world — was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.
Angkor Wat is the largest religious complex in the world, originally built between 1113 and 1150 CE as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu by King Suryavarman II, before gradually becoming a Buddhist temple from the late 13th century onward — a use it retains today as an active site of worship. UNESCO inscribed the wider Angkor archaeological park as a World Heritage Site in 1992 for its outstanding architectural and artistic value. The temple is Cambodia’s most recognized national symbol, appearing on the country’s flag, and draws millions of international visitors each year.
