A separate, frequently cited 2012 study by Jonah Berger and Katherine Milkman analyzed thousands of New York Times articles and found that emotional arousal โ not whether an emotion felt good or bad โ was the strongest predictor of sharing. Awe and anger, both high-arousal emotions, drove significantly more sharing than sadness, a low-arousal emotion, even though sadness is also negative. Why Trends Fade Just as Fast
The same mechanics that create rapid spread also create rapid decay. Because platforms reward novelty, a trendโs visibility drops sharply once its format becomes predictable โ audiences habituate to a joke or format quickly, and creators move to the next trigger. Studies of trending-topic lifespans on major platforms consistently find that most trends peak within 24 to 72 hours before attention shifts elsewhere, which is why "trending" is measured as a snapshot in time rather than a fixed state.
