Who is Zhambyl Zhabayev?

Zhambyl Zhabayev was born in the Zhetysu (Semirechye) region of southeastern Kazakhstan and became one of the most celebrated akyns in Kazakh history — a traditional oral poet-improviser who composed and performed verse to the accompaniment of the dombra. He rose to prominence through aitys, the competitive poetic dueling tradition in which akyns improvise verse in direct exchange with rivals, and he was renowned for his quick wit, memory for epic and lyric forms, and moral authority as a singer of Kazakh history and values. His long life spanned the late Russian imperial period, revolution, and the early Soviet era, during which his poetry was adapted to contemporary Soviet and wartime patriotic themes, bringing him wide recognition beyond Kazakhstan. The city of Taraz was renamed Zhambyl in his honor for several decades of the Soviet period. He is remembered as one of the last great masters of the classical akyn oral tradition, and his recorded verses remain an important part of the study of Kazakh oral literary heritage.
