Who is Vigdís Finnbogadóttir?

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir is an Icelandic stateswoman who served as the fourth President of Iceland from 1980 to 1996, becoming the world's first woman democratically elected as a national head of state. Before entering politics, she worked as a French teacher, theater director, and television host, developing a reputation as an articulate, independent public figure. Running as a single divorced mother against three male opponents in the 1980 presidential election, she won a narrow victory that drew international attention and became a landmark moment for women in politics worldwide. During her sixteen years in office, largely a ceremonial and unifying role within Iceland's parliamentary system, she championed Icelandic language and culture, environmental causes, and gender equality, and became an internationally recognized advocate for women's leadership. After leaving the presidency, she served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and founded the Vigdís International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding at the University of Iceland, which now bears her name. She remains a widely respected figure in Iceland and a global symbol of women's political representation.
