Who is Valentin Claireaux?
Valentin Claireaux is a French former professional ice hockey forward born on 5 April 1991 in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, one of the very few elite athletes to emerge from the small archipelago. He began his senior career with Amiens in the French league before moving abroad, playing four seasons in Finland and then several seasons in the Czech Republic, most recently with HC Vítkovice. Claireaux made his debut for the French national team during the 2011-2012 season and went on to represent France at eight IIHF World Championships over more than a decade, along with four Olympic qualification tournaments, wearing jersey number 12 for the Bleus. Across more than fifty appearances for the national team he contributed goals and assists in some of France's highest-profile international matches. He ended his professional career in 2024 at age thirty-three to reunite with his family after several seasons living apart from them, and has since spoken of wanting to put his experience to use developing ice hockey back home in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.
