Ebbanja terigenda.

“A debt does not just go away.”

Obligations and debts do not disappear on their own; they must eventually be settled.

Gwe bakwatira mu kituli nga ye mubbi.

“Whoever is caught in the hole is the thief.”

Whoever is caught red-handed is held responsible, whatever the deeper truth may be.

Abangi babi kulya, naye ku mirimo balungi.

“A crowd is bad for eating but good for work.”

Sharing food among many leaves little for each person, but many hands make labor light.

Kibi kyo kisinga omulungi owa munno.

“Your own, even if bad, is better than your neighbor's, however good.”

People naturally value what belongs to them over something better that belongs to someone else.

Nnannyini mulimo takeera kwota muliro.

“The owner of the work is never in a hurry to warm himself by the fire.”

A person who truly bears responsibility for a task takes it seriously and does not rush off to comfort.

Ababiri babibira ebigambo, naye abasatu babisattula.

“Two people can keep a secret, but three will let it out.”

The more people who share a secret, the more likely it is to spread.

K'ezaala k'ekomberera.

“What you have given birth to is what you kiss.”

People naturally cherish and favor what is truly their own.

Maaso mabi tegayiwa tulo.

“An evil face never sleeps peacefully.”

Guilt and wrongdoing rob a person of true rest.

Ebirungi biri wala.

“Good things are far away.”

Whatever is truly valuable is usually hard to reach and requires effort to obtain.

Kwana bangi, weesige batono.

“Sleep among many, but trust only a few.”

It is wise to be sociable with many people while confiding only in a trusted few.

Njala evumbula.

“Hunger uncovers the truth.”

Need and hardship strip away pretense and reveal what is real.

Akabimbi akatono kakira ekyosi.

“A small firm pumpkin is worth more than a large hollow one.”

Quality matters more than size; something small but sound outweighs something big but empty.

Kappa w'etali, emmese yeekola ebigenyi.

“When the cat is away, the rat holds its own feast.”

People act freely, and sometimes carelessly, once the one who kept them in check is gone.

Mazzi masabe tegaloga nnyonta.

“Water that is only prayed for does not quench thirst.”

Wishing for something is not enough; real results come only from real action.

Bw'ogwa awabi, eyali munno akwerabira.

“When you fall on hard times, the one who was your friend forgets you.”

Adversity reveals which friendships were shallow and which were genuine.

Omukazi omulima, azaala emmere; omunafu azaala omuddo.

“A hard-working woman harvests food; a lazy one harvests weeds.”

The results a person reaps in life reflect the effort they put into their work.

Akabi tikeekisa.

“Danger does not hide itself.”

Real danger makes itself known; it cannot be avoided simply by refusing to see it.

Mmere mbi terumya njala.

“Bad food does not satisfy hunger.”

A poor or half-hearted solution never truly meets a real need.

Oyita ewala, n'otuuka emirembe.

“Go the long way round, and you arrive safely.”

A longer but safer path is wiser than a risky shortcut.

Abali awamu, tebalema kuyomba.

“People who live together cannot avoid quarrelling.”

Disagreements are a natural, unavoidable part of close relationships.

Akatono, kekazzza omukwaano.

“A small gift strengthens a friendship.”

Even a modest gesture of generosity can deepen a bond between people.

Akozesa emikono gye, tabulwa ky'aalya.

“One who uses both hands never lacks something to eat.”

Consistent hard work ensures a person is provided for.

Ssajjabbi, tiribulwa kye lisiimwako.

“Even a bad man is never without some quality that pleases.”

No person is entirely without good qualities, however flawed they may seem.

Akwata empola, atuuka wala.

“One who moves slowly goes far.”

Careful, deliberate effort achieves more in the long run than reckless haste.

Okwagalana kyayi kya mpiso, bwe kitasoba tikitunga.

“Mutual love is like the thread in a needle: if it does not pass through the eye, it cannot sew.”

A relationship only holds together when both people truly connect and support one another.

Abalungi mbwa ya nnamaaso, bw'etebba n'eyigga.

“The beautiful are like a big-eyed dog: it may prove a thief or a fine hunter.”

A pleasing appearance reveals nothing about a person's true character.

Bannange bangi, nga tonnagwa wabi.

“You can claim to have many friends only until you fall on hard times.”

True friendship is proven, not assumed, and is tested by adversity.

Bakuseredde mu katale, naye oyombela mu kubo.

“You were cheated in the market, yet you argue about it in the road.”

Disputes should be settled at the time and place where they happen, not dragged out elsewhere.

Omusiru takufuula musiru.

“A fool does not make you a fool.”

Do not lower yourself to someone else's foolish behavior; choose your responses wisely.

Ky'otonnalya, tokyesunga; ettooke balitutte kiro.

“Do not count as yours what you have not yet received; the bananas were taken back in the night.”

Do not celebrate a gain before it is truly secured, since it can still be lost.

Azaala, akira atema ente.

“One who bears a child is greater than one who slaughters a cow.”

People and family are worth more than temporary material wealth.

Ataliiwo, y'atta embogo.

“The one who was not there is the one who claims to have killed the buffalo.”

Those who boast loudest about an experience are often the ones who were not really part of it.

Entasiima ebula agiwa.

“An ungrateful person will eventually find no one left to give to him.”

Gratitude keeps generosity flowing; ingratitude eventually dries it up.

Ab'oluganda bwe bayomba, tossaayo kikyo.

“When relatives quarrel, do not add your own stick to the fire.”

It is wise to stay out of a family dispute rather than making it worse.

Linda kiggweeyo, afumita mukira.

“Wait too long for the beast to fully emerge, and you will only spear its tail.”

Hesitating too long causes a good opportunity to slip away.

Akutwala ekiro, omusiima bukedde.

“The one who leads you through the night, you thank in the morning.”

The true value of someone's help is often only recognized after the fact.

Agenda gy'amanyi, tazibirirwa budde.

“One who travels a familiar road is never afraid of the dark.”

Knowledge and preparation remove fear of the unknown.

Kamu, kamu, gwe muganda.

“Twig by twig, a bundle is made.”

Small, steady contributions accumulate into something substantial.

Agali awamu, ge galuma ennyama.

“Teeth that stand together chew the meat; teeth with gaps only sneer.”

People who unite and work together accomplish what a divided group cannot.

Empera tekwata magulu, ekwata akamwa.

“Boasting does not move the legs, only the mouth.”

Loud talk is easy, but it takes real courage and action to face genuine danger.

Munno mu kabi, ye munno ddala.

“The friend who stays with you in trouble is the true friend.”

Genuine friendship is proven by loyalty during hardship, not by words alone.

Ab'oluganda bita, bikoonagana ne bitayatika.

“Relatives are like beer-calabashes: they knock against each other but do not break.”

Family bonds can withstand friction and conflict without being destroyed.

Akatono akatuuse, kakira ekinene ekisuubize.

“A small thing received is worth more than a big thing only promised.”

A modest but certain gain is more valuable than a grand but uncertain promise.

Obukaajumbe, anaabusereka akeera.

“One who must put new thatch on the old roof does it early in the morning.”

Necessary but difficult tasks are best tackled promptly, without delay.

Maddu tigaggwaako mulamu.

“Medicine never runs out for one who is still alive.”

As long as a person is alive, there is always a way to seek help and find a remedy.

Ebitabo butiko: obutali bulungi butta.

“Books are like mushrooms: the bad ones kill.”

Not all knowledge is good knowledge; what a person chooses to read or believe can harm them if chosen poorly.

Amagezi nsejjere: buli efuluma emmula bwayo.

“Wisdom is like termite-hills: each one puts out new earth in its own way.”

Every person develops their own understanding and approach to life, shaped by their own experience.

Obulungi bukira obugaaga.

“Beauty is better than wealth.”

A pleasing character or appearance can carry a person further in life than riches alone.

Eka egwana mukazi na bba.

“A home suits a man and his wife together.”

A household is properly complete only when both husband and wife share it.

Akamegga enjovu, kenkana wa!

“However small, a thing can still bring down an elephant.”

Even something small or seemingly insignificant can bring down something great.
