Who is Tunku Abdul Rahman?
Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj was Malaya's chief minister from 1955 and became the first Prime Minister of independent Malaya in 1957, later leading the formation of the wider Federation of Malaysia in 1963. Born a prince of the Kedah royal family, he studied law in England before returning home to serve in the civil service and enter politics through the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), which he led as president. He negotiated Malaya's independence from British colonial rule through peaceful diplomacy rather than armed struggle, famously proclaiming 'Merdeka' (independence) seven times at a public rally on 31 August 1957. As prime minister, he built the multiracial Alliance coalition that governed the young nation, oversaw its early economic development, and represented Malaysia internationally, including as a founding figure in the Non-Aligned Movement and later as the first Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. He resigned as prime minister in 1970 following racial unrest but remained a revered elder statesman. He is honored as 'Bapa Kemerdekaan' (Father of Independence) and 'Bapa Malaysia' (Father of Malaysia).
