Sylvanie Burton

President of Dominica · circa 1960s

Who is Sylvanie Burton?

Sylvanie Burton was born in the village of Crayfish River in the Kalinago Territory of Dominica, a member of the Kalinago people, the island's indigenous community. She built a career in public service, earning a bachelor's degree in rural development and a master's degree in project management, and serving as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment, and Constituency Empowerment from 2014. On 27 September 2023 she was elected President of the Commonwealth of Dominica by Parliament, taking the constitutional oath on 2 October 2023, and became both the first woman and the first Kalinago person to hold the office of Head of State. Her election was widely reported across the Caribbean as a historic milestone, giving Dominica's indigenous Kalinago community representation at the highest level of national government for the first time. As President, her role is formally ceremonial and constitutional under Dominica's parliamentary system, while her election itself carried deep symbolic weight for both gender representation and indigenous recognition in a nation whose Kalinago Territory remains the only officially recognised indigenous Caribbean reserve still in existence.
