Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III
28th Sultan of Brunei, "Architect of Modern Brunei" · 1914–1986
Who is Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III?
Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III was the 28th Sultan of Brunei, reigning from 1950 until his abdication in 1967, and is widely honored in Brunei as the "Architect of Modern Brunei." Born in 1914, he ascended the throne in 1950 at a time when Brunei was a British protectorate with modest oil revenues beginning to accumulate. He used growing petroleum income from the Seria oilfield to fund an ambitious national development plan, building schools, hospitals, roads, and the country's water and electricity infrastructure, and he commissioned the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the capital, completed in 1958, which remains one of Brunei's most recognizable landmarks. In 1959 he negotiated and promulgated Brunei's first written constitution with Britain, which granted internal self-government while Britain retained control of defense and foreign affairs. Facing pressure to merge into the newly formed Federation of Malaysia in the early 1960s, he ultimately kept Brunei out of the federation following the 1962 Brunei Revolt and subsequent negotiations, preserving the sultanate's independent path. He abdicated in 1967 in favor of his eldest son, Hassanal Bolkiah, but continued to hold the title Bendahara Seri Maharaja and remained an influential adviser until his death in 1986.
