Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah
29th and current Sultan of Brunei, Prime Minister of Brunei · 1946
Who is Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah?
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is the 29th Sultan of Brunei, having ascended the throne in October 1967 upon the abdication of his father, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, making him one of the longest-reigning monarchs in the world. Born in 1946 in Brunei Town, now Bandar Seri Begawan, and educated partly in Britain, including at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he presided over Brunei's transition to full independence from the United Kingdom on 1 January 1984, after which Brunei joined the United Nations and ASEAN as a sovereign state. As Sultan he also serves as Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Minister of Finance, concentrating substantial executive authority in the monarchy under Brunei's Melayu Islam Beraja, or Malay Islamic Monarchy, philosophy of governance, formally adopted at independence. His reign has been defined by the management of Brunei's oil and natural gas wealth, extensive public welfare provisions including free healthcare and education for citizens, and the progressive introduction of Sharia criminal law provisions between 2014 and 2019. He is also widely known internationally for an extensive personal collection of luxury automobiles and for hosting lavish state events. He remains, as of the mid-2020s, the head of state of Brunei Darussalam.
